AMY CHAUHAN NEW DELHI DANCER
Hello! everyone.
I’m Indias first specially abled trans woman working in corporate sector as a Human resources manager in axis Bank.
Being a trans-woman with disability, life is full of challenge, but also one full of opportunities.
At the age of 7, in an accident, my both lower limbs had to be amputated to save my life. I started crawling and used tricycle for everyday travel. I was compelled to study from home, thereby missing all the fun and friend at school.
After completion of schooling, I got shortlisted in one the best college in my city but we could not afford to pay the fees. I actually had to beg in front of religious places (Gurudwara, Mandir, Mosques), and somehow managed to pay the admission fees. After securing admission, the struggle continued and thanks to some generous people I somehow completed my education.
My challenges didn’t end here. I was uncertain about my identity for many years. I was sure that I like to dress like a girl. When I came across LGBTQ+ community, I learnt about the hormone therapy and started transitioning. During my transition period, I got myself an opportunity in Customer Service Role. Initially accessibility was a challenge a I had to crawl up for 4 floors to work, but I somehow managed to work. However, my identity was always a matter of discussion instead of my work. After a while, I was offered a new role with a promise to support me in my gender affirming surgeries, but these did not materialize. Yes, over time there was physical accessibility features like ramp etc., but most of needs as trans person was sidelined leaving me with no choice but to quit. Then the sordid saga of job-search began. I interviewed with 10 firms but the only response was we will get back to you. Given my difficult financial situation, I started working as delivery agent for an eCommerce company. But the role was very challenging due to inaccessibility – and not all customers would cooperate – so many a time I had to go pack without delivering the parcel. It was a tough phase for me and seemed that my aspiration for a Corporate job will remain.
I shared my challenges with v-shesh and was kept communicating with them everyday day. I was provided with total support in interview preparation – and when the interview with Accenture happened I know I would make. My interview experience with Accenture was simply great, they were very respectful to my needs, and also understood and valued my insight and experience. I will be joining Accenture in the following week and would like to thank Accenture for providing a great opportunity. Now I’m working in a excellent organization India first bank Axis Bank limited as a Human resources manager. I very grateful to you entire banking.
